Summer is in full swing, and we’re pleased to announce that the DataFlex conference in Amsterdam is almost sold out. FlexRoads (formerly known as EDUC) will take place on 11–12 June, with workshops in the days leading up to the event – read more about the conference here.

FrontIoT ApS will be represented by Johan Broddfelt (speaker), Klaus Berthelsen and Charlotte Grønvold. We look forward to meeting colleagues, being introduced to the Tech Stack and, not least, celebrating Data Access’s 50th anniversary.

Basic course in DataFlex Data Dictionary – NEW!
Data Dictionaries in DataFlex are the intelligent layer between your app and your database.
They handle data entry, validation, storage and business rules. DataAccess has created a video course where you learn, step by step, how to use Data Dictionaries to streamline development, protect data and make DataFlex applications more efficient.

DataFlex DataPump v25.0
Why would you use this tool when you know that DataFlex Studio can be used for this task?
If your current data is still stored in a DataFlex embedded database and you or a third party wish to query the data, you must write dedicated software, run a query/reporting tool, or use an ODBC driver such as FlexODBC. With DataFlex Data Pump, you can schedule data conversion at fixed times (e.g. every night) and have near-real-time data available for querying the next day. That’s brilliant!! Wouldn’t you like a tool that lets you view table definitions and search your source code for table and column references? Or, not least, communicate directly with DataFlex Studio to open workspaces and packages exactly at the line you need!

SCANDUC 2025 was a success, attendees went home inspired by presentations from DataAccess’ young talented team, but also from DataFlex users. The PowerPoint presentations are now available on SCANDUC under ‘Downloads’. We have also added pictures of the conference and our surprise evening under ‘impressions’.

DataAccess is making a shift that will take DataFlex into the future in both marketing and technology.

Watch this presentation given by CEO Nick Nikijuluw at the European DataFlex Conference this autumn, where he presents the DataFlex Road Map. We are very excited about these initiatives and we look forward to starting the development in 2025.

Dataaccess has now released the PPT of the presentations from the EDUC conference in Split. There are also photos if you want to see what you missed.

SCANDUC 2025 (Scandinavian DataFlex Users Conference) will be held in Copenhagen on 3 – 4 April at the Scandic Copenhagen Hotel. Mark your calendars now!

DataFlex 25.0 Beta 1 has just been released and contains (in addition to bug fixes) new features for handling regular expressions and CSS variables. Download it here. It’s a nice Christmas present if you need to relax a bit during the festive season.

We have just returned from the DataFlex EDUC 2024 conference in Split, Croatia and we have a lot of news to share with you.

DataFlex 25.0 alpha. Now it should be good enough. The next version of DataFlex is coming soon in an alpha version. It was announced at this year’s EDUC conference, where the new features were presented by Harm Wibier. Here are a few of the new smart additions:

● Dashboards – Build customizable dashboards in DataFlex code
● Composites – New language feature for composing multiple objects into a class.
● Navigation Designer – drag ‘n drop UI for building drill-down apps

Sture Andersen shares his reaction to the presentation of ‘Navigation Designer’ here. We will describe other news in future newsletters.

DataFlex after version 25. The conference also gave an insight into the plans for DataFlex in the longer term.

In addition to a package manager that keeps track of your libraries and helps keep them updated, we can expect to see a database modelling tool built into the DataFlex studio.

In addition, we have the Tech Stack project, which includes

● Support for off-line applications
● Support for cross-platform apps like in the old days (windows, linux, unix, webassembly)
● Distribution via Docker containers (Kubernetes)

These are the things we’ll be hearing a lot more about after DataFlex 25, but for now we’re just waiting for an alpha version.

Important! Security update for DataFlex 23 and 24

A security update has just been released by Data Access and it applies to DataFlex 23.0 and 24.0. The update is described as follows:

● Fixed Leaking handles in WebApp Server in the process pool logic (Important!)
● Fixed a Security issue in the DataFlex WebApp Framework.
● (DF24.0) Fixed an SPLF licence check issue causing one WebApp less to be allowed than the license permits.

The security update applies to both DataFlex Studio and DataFlex Server. And it’s important to update. You must have your registration codes ready when you do so, as they will be used during the re-installation.

PS. Although it’s not directly stated in the link, it’s a good idea to restart the machine between uninstalling the old version and reinstalling the new one.

It’s autumn and the nights are getting darker. So it’s time to dive into the DataFlex code and start looking forward to hearing about all the news the DataAccess team is showcasing at the upcoming DataFlex conference on 10 & 11 October in Split, Croatia EDUC 2024

We can already reveal that the conference will be packed with super topical and technical presentations from Data Access’s TechStack portfolio. This ambitious project will replace the current Win32 base with an OS-independent new technology stack. In the future, you will be able to run your DataFlex applications on Windows, Linux or even Mac OS. It is not without reason that the theme is; ‘DataFlex to New Horizons’. You can experience this up close and personal in Split. Read more about the conference at this link

Charlotte will, true to tradition, provide a drink at the bar :=)

The workshops (which this time are all-day) take place in the days leading up to the conference – Tuesday 9 October and Wednesday 10 October. You can choose between Secure with DataFlex, Drill down App, or Build customisable dashboards – read more here.

We have chosen to feature a success story about how one DataFlex developer helps another DataFlex developer with a solution of great benefit to the company.

Carsten Trolle from Løgstrup A/S has given us this story:

Løgstrup Steel had a challenge distributing updates to their LogCalc application (DataFlex Windows). The application is used by their customers and partners and is based on local databases that need to be synchronised regularly (both ways), both the content and the table definitions and the application itself. Carsten therefore contacted Nils Svedmyr, RDC Tools. He had heard about DUF via the DataFlex Forum.

Nils has developed the Database Update Framework (DUF), which is a tool for robust and secure updating of applications and databases on remote installations. Based on this, he has created a solution for Løgstrup Steel that solves the challenge – listed below:

Multiple data folders that can be set up/modified by the end user. Both for the embedded database and for the SQL database.

– Automated updating of data, files and programmes using a secure FTP server to download new files and/or data to be added to the existing database.

– Automatic database update that automatically changes the structure of the database on remote installation sites.

Dear everyone

It’s midsummer and the holidays are just around the corner. Many good things are happening this summer, the European Football Championships, the Olympics and the Tour de France, but maybe also an upcoming DataFlex 24.1 release…?

The DataFlex Conference EDUC 2024 is now open for registrations. Remember ‘Early Bird’. If you register before 30 June, you can save money. This year’s conference will be held in Split, an ancient and historic city located in Croatia right on the Adriatic Sea. Read more about EDUC at this link, where you can also keep up to date with the agenda.

Flextron has its own support forum. Flextron is a technology that bridges the gap between Windows applications and Web applications. This means that Flextron makes it possible to use web components or entire web panels in your Windows applications. You can also run a complete web app as a Windows programme (which does not require IIS to be installed). For example, Spotify is based on the same kind of technology. In this video from Data Access North America, you can get an insight into what Flextron can contribute. And here is the link to the Flextron support forum.

Price increase on licences
For the first time in many years, Data Access is raising prices on DataFlex licences by approximately 10%, starting 1 July 2024. For questions, please contact Charlotte.

When using the DataFlex Online Help and there is something you don’t understand or would like clarification on, you can send an email at the bottom of each page that goes directly to the support team at Data Access and you will always get an answer!

Improved DataFlex LibXL Library released
DataFlex LibXL Library version 1.9.0 for DataFlex 2024 (and earlier) is now available for download.

With DataFlex LibXL Library you can read, generate and modify spreadsheets in DataFlex without having to install Excel or other spreadsheet software!

This new version is updated to the latest LibXL DLL (version 4.3.0.14) and most changes are bug fixes. The version can be downloaded at the following link.

EDUC 2024 in Croatia 10-11 October with workshop on 8 & 9 October. Programme and registration will open soon – be sure to bookmark the link to EDUC.

Charlotte Grønvold, FrontIoT and Nick Nikijuluw, DataAccess, have been on a 3-day customer road trip in Sweden visiting new and old customers. We started in Stockholm and drove all the way down to Helsingborg. Besides the great experience of driving through this beautiful country, it is just as great a pleasure to visit DataFlex customers who take the time to talk to us about the business and DataFlex. Meeting face-to-face is still something different than online. Next time we’ll take a trip around Denmark.
